What Lives Beneath the Surface
September 22, 2026
““Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.””Psalm 139:23 NIV
Inviting God to reveal the hidden thoughts and motives shaping our lives.
God Who Knows Me Completely,
Much of what happens within me remains beneath the surface.
A reaction appears before I understand its source.
A familiar fear shapes a new decision.
An old wound speaks through a present frustration.
I can recognize what I did and still misunderstand why I did it.
David invited You to חָקַר (chaqar).
To search. To examine deeply. To investigate what cannot be seen from the outside.
Search me, God.
Not because You need to discover what is hidden, but because I need Your help to see it truthfully.
Reveal the motives I have disguised as wisdom.
Show me where anxiety is directing my choices.
Uncover the resentment beneath my distance, the pride beneath my defensiveness, and the grief beneath my anger.
But keep examination from becoming condemnation.
I do not invite Your searching because I believe everything within me is corrupt. I invite it because I trust Your love enough to tell me the truth.
Help me notice what is good as well.
The healing that has begun. The patience that was not present before. The desire for You that continues beneath my distractions.
Let self-awareness become a doorway to transformation, not another reason to remain preoccupied with myself.
Show me what needs attention.
Then lead me beyond recognition toward repentance, healing, and a more faithful way of living.
I place the hidden places before You.
Search them with truth.
Meet them with mercy.
Amen.
To search, examine, investigate, or explore deeply.
In Psalm 139:23, חָקַר (chaqar) expresses David’s willingness to be fully examined by God. This is more than private self-analysis. It is an invitation for divine truth to reach the motives, fears, wounds, and desires we may struggle to recognize on our own. God searches us not to humiliate us, but to reveal what needs healing and lead us toward greater freedom and faithfulness.
