Truth That Can Be Heard
October 2, 2026
““Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.””Ephesians 4:15 NIV
Speaking honestly in a manner shaped by love, humility, and the hope of growth.
God of Truth and Love,
There are times when silence protects peace.
There are other times when silence only protects avoidance.
I do not always know when to speak.
I fear being misunderstood, creating conflict, or making a difficult relationship worse.
At other times, I speak too quickly because frustration wants relief more than the relationship needs wisdom.
Your Word calls me to ἀληθεύω (alētheuō).
To speak truth. To deal truthfully. To live without concealment or deception.
Teach me to tell the truth in love.
Keep me from using honesty as permission to be harsh.
Truth is not more faithful because it wounds unnecessarily.
But keep me from calling fearfulness kindness.
Love does not require me to hide what needs to be addressed.
Before I speak, examine my purpose.
Am I trying to restore or punish?
Am I seeking understanding or simply trying to win?
Am I speaking because the moment is right, or because my emotions demand immediate release?
Give me language that is clear without becoming cruel.
Help me address behavior without attacking identity.
Let me acknowledge my own part without taking responsibility for what does not belong to me.
When a boundary must be expressed, give me courage to state it without apology or contempt.
When correction is needed, let humility govern my tone.
Prepare the other person to hear what is true, but release me from believing I can control their response.
May my words serve truth, love, and growth.
And when silence would be easier but less faithful, help me speak.
Amen.
To speak truth, deal truthfully, or live in a manner consistent with what is true.
In Ephesians 4:15, ἀληθεύω (alētheuō) joins truthfulness with love as part of Christian maturity. Biblical honesty is neither harsh confrontation nor fearful avoidance. It seeks what is true while remaining attentive to the dignity of the person hearing it. Speaking truth in love means that both the content and the manner of our words are shaped by Christ.
