The Return of the Soul
October 24, 2026
“He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”Psalm 23:3 NIV
Allowing God to restore the inner life that exhaustion has scattered or depleted.
Shepherd of My Soul,
Exhaustion affects more than my energy.
It can make me feel distant from myself.
I continue functioning, but joy becomes harder to reach.
My attention fragments.
Prayer feels thin.
Even the things I love can begin to feel like responsibilities.
David says You refresh the soul.
The Hebrew carries the movement of שׁוּב (shuv).
To return. To restore. To bring back what has wandered or been diminished.
Bring my soul back to me.
Restore the parts of my inner life that have been scattered by hurry, pressure, and prolonged responsibility.
Return me to the ability to notice beauty.
Return me to unforced laughter.
Return me to prayer that is more than a request for enough strength to keep working.
Return me to the people I love with enough presence to truly be with them.
I confess that I sometimes expect renewal to arrive all at once.
I look for a dramatic change and overlook the quieter signs of restoration.
A clear thought.A deeper breath.A desire returning.A moment when the future feels possible again.
Help me honor these beginnings.
Do not let me spend newly restored strength by immediately returning to the pace that depleted me.
Guide me onto paths that can sustain the life You are renewing.
Restoration is not simply giving me enough energy to resume every old pattern.
It is teaching me another way to walk.
Shepherd me gently.
Gather what has become scattered within me.
And lead my soul home.
Amen.
To return, turn back, restore, or bring something back to its proper place.
In Psalm 23:3, the phrase translated “refreshes my soul” carries the sense of restoration and return expressed by שׁוּב (shuv). God does more than replenish depleted energy. He brings the inner life back from places of weariness, distraction, and despair. Biblical renewal is not always a return to the same pace or patterns. The Shepherd restores us and then guides us into a more faithful way of walking.
