When the Road Shifts
September 4, 2026
““In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.””Proverbs 16:9 NIV
Learning to recognize changed plans as possible guidance rather than certain failure.
God Who Directs My Steps,
I make plans because I want to move through life with wisdom.
I consider what is possible.I prepare for what may come.I choose a direction and begin walking.
But sometimes the road changes after I have already committed myself to the journey.
A door closes.A timeline shifts. An opportunity takes a form I did not expect.
What once seemed clear becomes uncertain again.
In those moments, I am tempted to believe that something has gone wrong.
But Your Word speaks of כּוּן (kun).
To establish. To make firm.To set securely in place.
I may plan the course, but You establish the steps.
This does not make planning meaningless. It reminds me that my plans are not sovereign.
Keep me teachable when the way forward changes.
Do not let my commitment to a plan become resistance to Your direction. Give me enough humility to adjust without interpreting every adjustment as defeat.
Sometimes the changed path protects me from what I could not see.
Sometimes it prepares me for what I am not yet ready to carry.
Sometimes it leads me toward a purpose I would not have chosen because I did not know it existed.
Help me hold my plans with diligence, but not with desperation.
When circumstances shift, quiet my first reaction. Before I force the old plan forward, teach me to ask whether You are establishing a different step.
I do not want to be so devoted to reaching my intended destination that I fail to notice where You are leading me.
Make my feet responsive to Your wisdom.
If the road shifts today, keep my trust from shifting with it.
You remain faithful, even when the route is revised.
Amen.
To establish, make firm, prepare, or set securely in place.
In Proverbs 16:9, כּוּן (kun) describes God establishing a person’s steps. Human beings are invited to think, prepare, and plan, but our vision remains limited. God’s direction may confirm our plans or reshape them. The word reminds us that a changed route does not necessarily mean an abandoned purpose. God can make our steps secure even when the road differs from the one we expected.
