What Deserves Your Trust

September 9, 2026

““But test them all; hold on to what is good.””1 Thessalonians 5:21 NIV
Prayer Focus

Testing our impressions carefully before allowing them to direct our lives.

Prayer

God of Truth,

Not every thought that feels spiritual comes from You.

Some thoughts rise from fear.Others from desire. Some are shaped by old wounds, personal ambition, or the need to feel certain.

Still, I can become attached to an impression simply because it arrived with strong emotion.

Your Word tells me to δοκιμάζω (dokimazō).

To test.To examine. To determine what is genuine.

Give me the humility to test what I think I have heard.

Let me ask whether it agrees with Scripture.

Let me consider whether it reflects the character of Christ.

Let me notice whether it produces love, integrity, wisdom, and the courage to obey.

Keep me from calling something Your will merely because it gives me what I want.

But also keep discernment from becoming endless suspicion. You did not tell me to reject everything. You told me to test everything and hold on to what is good.

Teach me to examine without becoming cynical.

When an idea survives honest prayer, biblical truth, wise counsel, and the passage of time, give me confidence to receive it.

When it does not, give me freedom to release it without embarrassment.

I would rather revise my understanding than protect my pride.

Make me more faithful to truth than to my first interpretation of it.

What comes from You does not need my defensiveness to survive examination.

Give me a discerning mind, a teachable spirit, and a heart willing to hold firmly only to what is good.

Amen.

Greek Word Highlight
δοκιμάζωdokimazō

To test, examine, prove, or recognize as genuine.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:21, δοκιμάζω (dokimazō) calls believers to evaluate spiritual claims rather than accepting or rejecting them without thought. The word was used for examining something to determine its true quality. Biblical discernment welcomes the Spirit while recognizing that human interpretation can be mistaken. Testing protects us from deception and helps us hold what is genuinely good with greater confidence.
