Do Not Rush the Meaning
September 18, 2026
““Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.””James 5:7 NIV
Resisting the urge to interpret an unfinished season too quickly.
God of Seed and Harvest,
I often decide what a season means before it has finished unfolding.
A delay becomes denial.A setback becomes failure.A quiet season becomes evidence that nothing is happening.
But a farmer does not judge the field the day after the seed is planted.
Your Word speaks of μακροθυμέω (makrothymeō).
To be patient. To remain steady over time.To resist reacting before the right moment.
Give me patience with what is still developing.
I confess that uncertainty makes me eager to assign meaning. If I can name the season, I feel as though I can control it.
But I may be calling something barren while roots are forming beneath the soil.
I may be mourning an ending while You are preparing a beginning.
I may be questioning my progress because growth has not yet become visible.
Teach me to distinguish honest evaluation from premature judgment.
Show me what requires action and what requires time.
Help me tend what You have entrusted to me without digging it up repeatedly to see whether it is growing.
When discouragement speaks too soon, remind me that unfinished does not mean unfruitful.
When impatience tempts me to abandon the process, give me the steadiness to remain.
I do not ask You to make me indifferent to time. I ask You to keep time from becoming the measure of Your faithfulness.
Let me do today’s work and leave tomorrow’s fruit in Your hands.
I will not rush to name what You are still forming.
Amen.
To be patient, remain steadfast, or endure without reacting prematurely.
In James 5:7, μακροθυμέω (makrothymeō) describes the patience of a farmer who tends the land while waiting for rain and harvest. This patience is not inactivity. It is disciplined steadiness during a process that cannot be forced. Spiritually, patience keeps us from assigning a final meaning to circumstances God is still unfolding. It allows us to remain faithful while the outcome is not yet visible.
