The Grace of Today’s Portion

October 13, 2026

““Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.””Proverbs 30:8 NIV
Prayer Focus

Receiving God’s provision without allowing either scarcity or excess to govern the heart.

Prayer

God Who Provides,

I often think about provision in extremes.

I fear not having enough.

Then, when my needs are met, I begin imagining how much more would make me feel secure.

But security keeps moving whenever it depends on accumulation.

The prayer in Proverbs asks for a חֹק (choq).

An allotted portion. What is appointed for the day.Enough to meet the need faithfully.

Teach me to receive today’s portion.

Thank You for the food, shelter, strength, relationships, opportunities, and grace already present in my life.

Forgive me for overlooking provision because it did not arrive as abundance.

At the same time, keep me from romanticizing lack.

Poverty is not a spiritual ideal, and unmet needs are not evidence of greater faith.

Where provision is insufficient, lead me toward help, wise action, and a community willing to share.

Where I have more than I need, show me what the excess is for.

Do not let abundance make me forgetful or scarcity make me fearful.

Give me freedom from the constant question, “What if it is not enough?”

Help me ask instead, “What has been entrusted to me today?”

Let me steward this portion without anxiety.

Let me enjoy it without guilt.

Let me share it without resentment.

Tomorrow will bring needs I cannot meet in advance.

When tomorrow comes, You will still be God.

For this day, teach me to recognize the grace already on the table.

Amen.

Hebrew Word Highlight
חֹקchoq

An appointed portion, prescribed share, or what has been allotted.

In Proverbs 30:8, חֹק (choq) describes the portion of bread appointed for the day. The prayer seeks neither deprivation nor unchecked excess, but provision that supports faithful dependence upon God. Biblical enough does not glorify poverty or condemn abundance. It receives what is needed with gratitude, seeks help when needs remain unmet, and asks how every portion can be stewarded wisely.
